the country in new jersey where voters head to the polls, governor chris christie will win reelection. the latest quinnipiac poll has him up over two to one over barba barbara buono. christie and his supporters hope to show the republican party how to win an election. we caught up with governor cristy on the campaign trail over the weekend and asked him what will likely be his victory speech on tuesday. >> sounds like you're planning for a message beyond new jersey. is that a fair assessment? >> i'm not planning for it. i think it's inevitable. people look at elections and they try to discern about what they mean at that moment and what they mean for the future. i think that what people will see is so unusual for what our party has created in the last couple of years that invariably people will draw from us. >> is the margin necessary to lay a future for your career? >> i don't think so. barack obama won the state by 17 points a year ago. the fact that you're talking to a republican about margin rather than can you win or. >> really good thing to have. >> at this stage you look at chr
christie is seeking to take a page from george w. bush's playbook and emerge as an even stronger 2016 presidential candidate. governor christie aiming for the widest republican margin of victory since tom keen won 69% of the vote back in 1985. and another long-term trend could be broken tomorrow. since virginia and new jersey vote together, it would be the first time, that the two states have elected governors from different parties since 1985. a lot of history there. joining me now, nbc news senior political editor mark murray and also senior washington correspondent for politico. i'll start with you mark. let's first talk about virginia. as i said, a 30-year trend seems to be on its way to being broken. >> well, right, of course the marquis contest is the gubernatorial race where terry mccalliffe is in the driver's seat. may be the closest contest will be the state attorney general's race between mark herring and mark o ben shane, the polling we've seen on attorney generals race is a little tougher. the polling we've seen it is very close. democrats do have the chance for a sweep. a

of talk about 2016. that happens immediately after 2012. you considered chris christie to be your running mate and ultimately you rejected him, and some reporting in the book indicates that there was some concerns about his background and your own investigations and your own vetting process. here's what they report in the book. the dossier on the garden state governor's background was littered with potential landmines. there was no point in thinking about christie further. with the clock running out, romney pulled the plug on it for food. questions about his lawsuits, his health, indeed his weight. do you look at those issues as disqualifyi disqualifying, and if so, why? >> i know the vetting people who went through that analysis and put together the report laid everything out. frankly, there wasn't anything they found that wasn't already part of the public record and hadn't been dealt with effectively by chris christie. there was nothing new there. the reason i chose paul ryan was, as i indicated before, which paul had a complement of skills and experience that i thought would be helpful
. puffer fish for chris christie. as you point out the romney campaign had serious concerns with chris christie's background. one of the reasons they didn't pick him. were you surprised christie has gotten such a big part of the buzz surrounding this book particularly as he heads to the polls tomorrow or folks head to the polls to potentially vote for him? >> look, he's a big exciting figure in american politics. there aren't many people like him. he's on his way tomorrow to be re-elected by a resounding margin. the fact there's focus isn't a surprise to either of us. what we found reporting the story, mitt romney's consideration of governor christie. what we found surprising was first of all he considered him and then rejected him because he thought there were too many aspects of his past which had been looked out a little in new jersey, in context of the politics there. governor romney said, look, in the national race everything is different. it will get a lot of scrutiny. he didn't want the distraction sarah palin caused when she was selected by john mccain. he rejected governor chr
